ZORYAN INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIP FOR DOCTORAL
STUDIES IN ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RESEARCH GUIDELINES
Objective
To encourage and assist students to pursue a PhD on the Armenian Genocide or a
comparative analysis of genocide with a focus on the Armenian Genocide.
Selection Committee
A committee of scholars appointed by the Zoryan Corporate Board will serve as
advisors on policies and procedures. They will meet or conference-call yearly to
review and select applicants for scholarships.
Selection Criteria
- The applicant must be currently enrolled full-time in
an accredited PhD program at a university in North America or Europe.
- Applicant must be a Ph.D. candidate at the ABD stage,
(i.e., all requirements for the PhD have been completed except for the
dissertation).
- The candidate’s doctoral thesis must be on the
Armenian Genocide or on a comparative analysis of genocide with a focus on
the Armenian Genocide.
- Academic excellence, based on a review of graduate
transcripts.
- Financial need, as determined by the Zoryan Selection
Committee.
- There are no restrictions as to the nationality of
the applicant.
- Two letters of recommendation, at least one from a
dissertation advisor who is sufficiently familiar with the project and can
attest to the candidate’s research skills and intellectual capabilities.
- A six-page description of the research project,
including theoretical approach, methodology and goals, with an assessment of
its importance in the context of current scholarship.
- A sample of a graduate paper related to the thesis
topic or a dissertation chapter, 25-30 pages in length.
- The following languages are considered an asset to
the applicant’s candidacy: Armenian, Ottoman Turkish, Modern Turkish,
English, and German.
Amount and Timing of Funding
- Applications must be received by February 28 each
year, except for 2005, when the deadline will be March 31.
- Scholarships will be awarded by April 30.
- Funds will be disbursed by the end of June.
- The amount awarded will vary according to the needs
of each project, and will not exceed $10,000 per year or $20,000 per
individual in total, over the course of four years. Students will be
re-evaluated every year. If a student fails to retain the continuing award,
another recipient will be selected as a replacement.
- Successful candidates must submit a report of at
least 1,000 words on the progress of their studies annually, as part of the
re-evaluation process. In addition, they must submit a letter from their
thesis advisor reporting on the student’s progress.
- Applications and all correspondence must be submitted
in either English or French.
- The candidate’s attendance at the Genocide and Human
Rights University Program at the first opportunity is a pre-requisite for
final approval for the scholarship, with tuition and expenses paid from the
scholarship.
Conditions
- A copy of the final, approved, PhD thesis must be
delivered to the Zoryan Institute within 3 months of acceptance by the
university.
